The hidden treasures of Renovating

Builders are a bit like treasure finders sometimes. When demolishing sites in order to renovate, extend or re-build, all manner of surprises, bizarre finds and hidden treasures can be found beneath the surface. From old metal biscuit tins filled with collectable magazines, to time capsules, to vintage jewellery.

There was a story of a builder working on the renovation of a country home. It was more dilapidated than he had first thought. The place seemed to have been abandoned for centuries, and cobwebs adorned every corner. While peeling back the damp old wallpaper, he discovered stunning original paper crafted by William Morris himself! This original Morris print turned out to be valued at a hefty sum and luckily, through careful handling, a great deal of the wallpaper was salvaged and used on the feature wall in the main reception.

Given such a find, the builder was excited to see what would be in the attic. As he climbed the rickety stairs, he heard a mysterious rustling sound. He cautiously opened the attic door, only to be greeted by an army of angry squirrels. It seemed the attic had become their secret sanctuary, and they didn’t take kindly to intruders. Once the squirrel issue was cleared, the attic did indeed house many wonderful and bizarre antiques, some a bit too tattered and some in perfect condition.

So you see, renovation can lead to some exciting finds. Though it can seem daunting to have to go through so much “bric-a-brac”, reminiscing over old memories (whether yours or someone else’s) from long-lost items can be a treat.
