All too often I hear of building projects that seemed destined to become a textbook example of how poor communication can cause significant delays. The homeowners have a clear vision for their dream home, but they struggled to convey their ideas effectively to the suppliers. As a result, the project hit multiple roadblocks that wasted valuable time.

Unfortunately, due to just simple lack of knowledge, the homeowners’ initial plans may lack crucial details and they frequently changed their requirements without informing the suppliers promptly. This led to confusion, incorrect orders, and numerous reworks. Meanwhile, the suppliers were frustrated by the lack of clear guidance and struggled to keep up with the evolving demands.

To fix this communication breakdown, I would implement several strategies:

1. Regular Meetings: I organised regular meetings with the homeowners and suppliers to ensure everyone was on the same page. These meetings provided a platform for open discussions and allowed for immediate clarifications.
2. Detailed Documentation: I would create comprehensive project documents, including design plans, material specifications, and timelines, to eliminate ambiguities and misunderstandings.
3. Single Point of Contact: Designating one representative from the homeowners’ side to communicate with the suppliers will streamline the process and reduced the risk of conflicting instructions.
4. Change Order Process: We established a clear process for change orders, ensuring that any modifications were documented, approved, and communicated to all parties involved.
